Dr Henk Maritz

DR HENK MARITZ IS AN OBSTETRICIAN-GYNAECOLOGIST WITH A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE RANGING FROM TRAUMA WORK AND HIGH-RISK OBSTETRICS TO CRITICAL CARE AND GYNAECOLOGY. HE HAS A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN GYNAECOLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES.

Now at Mediclinic Durbanville, a highly regarded, multidisciplinary acute care hospital and day clinic, Dr Maritz’s skills and passion for women’s health are available to Obstetrics and Gynaecology patients in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town and beyond.

Born and raised in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Maritz comes from a lineage of medical practitioners, as both his father and grandfather operated a medical practice whilst also farming. He knew early on that he wanted to become a doctor. “My father saved my life twice when I was a boy... I wanted to be able to do that for someone else,” he recalls.

After completing his MBChB at the University of Pretoria in 2013, Dr Maritz embarked on his medical career. He initially took an interest in trauma work during his time at a highly regarded trauma centre in rural KZN. However, his passion for Obstetrics and Gynaecology was ignited when he substituted for a colleague in their labour ward duties in 2016. Dr Maritz found the experience incredibly fulfilling and decided to specialise in the field. He immediately understood that women required sensitive and tailored care in an environment where they feel comfortable to express their needs.

In 2018, he began his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Over the course of his training, he gained experience in high-risk obstetrics, critical care, urogynaecology, gynae-oncology, family planning, infertility, and gynaecological surgical procedures.

In 2022, he took a position at a busy regional unit on the North Coast where he furthered his knowledge and practical skills. During this time he focused on patients in labour and especially strived to prevent unnecessary caesarean sections where possible – bearing in mind that a healthy mother AND baby are the primary objective.

Conversant in Afrikaans, English, and isiZulu, he brings a culturally sensitive approach to his practice, ensuring that patients from diverse backgrounds feel supported and understood.

At home Dr Maritz is a family man and again surrounded by women being married with two little girls. He cherishes spending time with his family outdoors and appreciating all Africa has to offer.
